The Santiam Canyon Community Chorus presents its 2023 Christmas show at 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at Stewart’s Hall, 158 SW Broadway, Mill City.
Directed by JoAnn Hebing, the program will cover a range of new and classic Christmas carols. Songs include a tribute to “Twas the Night Before Christmas” poem written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1823 and set to contemporary music.
Also featured is another famous author, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, with the singing of a modern arrangement of “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” with handbells played by the chorus.
“Spirit of the Season” from the movie, The Polar Express, will feature accompanying handbells.
The chant, “Magnificat (My Soul doth Magnify the Lord)” commonly known as the “Song of Mary” and the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah will add a reverential component to the chorus performance.
In addition to the songs by the chorus, children from the elementary school will perform. There will be a tenor solo by chorus member, Rick Stepper; and a four-hand piano duet by the chorus accompanist, Christi Smith and Hebing.
Rounding out the show are selections by the lady’s barbershop quartet, a flute solo by chorus member Alice Patterson, a vocal solo by the new pastor of the Presbyterian Church La Vonne Alexander, and sing-along songs with audience participation.
Christmas cookies will be served, along with cider and coffee. There will be items for auction and a 50/50 cash drawing.
The drawing “will be a great place to pick up Christmas presents and skip shopping with the crowds,” stated a press release from the chorus.
Admission is free, but donations are welcome to help support Santiam Canyon Community Chorus.
