WWII-themed choir concert set for Mill City

The Santiam Canyon Community Chorus is hosting its annual spring concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at Stewart’s Hall in Mill City, 158 SW Broadway St.

The free event, which is conducted in a partnership with the North Santiam Historical Society, will have a World War II theme.

“We were approached by the historical society in Mill City to join them in honoring veterans from WWII who gave their lives, and those in the Canyon who served,” said JoAnn Hebing, the chorus director.

The historical society will display memorabilia such as service uniforms, ration cards and other articles.

The entire 19-person chorus and small groups will be singing the most famous songs from that era, such as “Begin the Beguine,” “We’ll Meet Again,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “White Cliffs of Dover” and many more. The chorus is accompanied by Christie Smith.

“This music has been such fun to learn,” Hebing said, “and the audience will get to sing along on ‘This Land Is Your Land,’ ‘God Bless America’ plus a couple others.”

Refreshments will be served. The chorus also is hosting an auction, raffle and cookie sale to raise money for the group, now in its 20th year. The non-audition, community ensemble rehearses in Mill City and performs throughout the Santiam Canyon. Those interested in joining should contact Hebing, 503-859-2502.
