News for those who live, work and play in the Santiam Canyon

About Us

The Canyon Weekly was founded in 2010 by local residents Karen Widmer, Tim Widmer and Michelle Gates with the goal of sharing news and events throughout the Santiam Canyon, nestled in the scenic foothills of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains.

Their work reflected the small-town character of local communities, including Mill City, Scio, Lyons, Mehama, Elkhorn, Gates, Niagara, Detroit, Breitenbush, Idanha and Marion Forks. Whether they were printing state election results or photos from a school carnival, The Canyon Weekly was there to share stories that connected people. Archives by the original staff can be found at The Canyon Weekly on Issuu.

Canyon Strong

The people of the Santiam Canyon are a close-knit community, even more so after enduring declines in the logging industry, the COVID-19 pandemic and devastating wildfires in 2020. What could have knocked down many regions has revealed the cohesion and sense of purpose shared by those in the canyon, who see their home as a place worth protecting and nurturing. The Canyon Weekly is proud to share this dedication as part of a unique and stalwart community.

New owners, same mission

The Canyon Weekly was acquired in 2018 by Mt. Angel Publishing, Inc., which was founded in 2004 on the belief that newspapers should be guided by a strong community focus. This ethos continues to guide The Canyon Weekly, and its dedication to the unique and endearing people of the Santiam Canyon remains unchanged.
