Community wildfire preparedness event set for May 4

Reporter for The Canyon Weekly

A community wildfire preparedness day is being held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 at the Old School Community Center in Lyons, 22057 Emma St.

A goal of the event is to teach community members about defensible space. Defensible space refers to actions that property owners can take to reduce the amount of hazardous vegetation and combustible material around a building.

There are three zones to consider when discussing defensible space: the immediate zone within 5 feet of the building, an intermediate zone (5-30 feet) and an extended zone (30 to 100 feet).

Exhibitors and presenters include the Oregon Department of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service, Lyons Fire District, Stayton Fire District, the Santiam Long Term Recovery Group and the Office of the Oregon State Fire Marshal.

The event includes activities for kids, vendors, free food, fire trucks on display as well as appearances by Smokey Bear and Bigfoot.
