A smashing success – The Get-A-Way thrives in new location

Reporter for The Canyon Weekly

The Get-A-Way restaurant has encountered overwhelming success after moving into a larger building earlier this year, with plans to continue expanding offerings this summer.

The eatery first opened in March of 2023 at the former location of Poppa Al’s Famous Hamburgers on Santiam Boulevard, in Mill City.

They quickly became known for their own burgers, with hand-smashed patties bringing in and keeping many new customers.

A larger venue became available down the road at 218 Santiam Blvd., the former location of Sam’s Krispy Krunchy Chicken. The Get-A-Way paused operations in December of 2023 to relocate and had its reopening at the new site Jan. 11.

The move allowed them to open in the mornings and add breakfast to the menu, while continuing to offer burgers, shakes and sandwiches for lunch and dinner.

Owner Ashley Yardley, of Lyons, said business boomed so much they unexpectedly had to buy more plates and cups to keep up with demand. She told The Canyon Weekly word-of-mouth has brought in many new customers, sometimes from as far as Bend.

“People are really spreading the word about us and it’s beyond appreciated,” said Yardley.

She said one of their new items, the Sasquatch Burger, has been a big success.

It features a hand-smashed patty topped with pulled pork, cheddar, bacon, onion rings, veggies and their signature “Canyon Sauce.”

“It’s a must try!” said Yardley.

Also on the menu are Philly cheesesteak sandwiches by Eddy’s Phillys, of Salem, which is owned by Yardley’s brother-in-law Eddy Garcia. He purchased the building in 2023 with designs to open a cheesesteak-focused tavern. With Yardley now renting the space, she is able to share Garcia’s passion for satisfying food.

“Eddy thought it would be awesome to have more options in the Canyon and [the sandwiches are] doing amazing,” she said.

“Eddy and I have a great relationship. He’s an awesome person to do business with.”

As business thrives, The Get-A-Way is looking to expand its offerings and has applied for a liquor license to start serving beer. She said the hope is to begin offering cold brews with the burgers starting in the summer.

Yardley said, since first opening last year, she has learned “being a small business owner is hard work but also so rewarding.”

“We have met so many new great people and have gained lots of new friends along the way,” said Yardley. “Our community has been the heart of our success in our new building. Everyone is cheering us on and is so friendly we are proud to be here in our little town of Mill City!”
