Santiam girls score first win under new coach

The Santiam High girls basketball squad has scored its first victory under new coach Hannah Thompson.

Thompson, who played three years for the Wolverines before moving on to play college ball at College of the Siskiyous and Cal State Fullerton, replaced long-time coach David Plotts. Thompson, a sociology major at Fullerton, works in real estate with an office in Salem.

Santiam lost its first three games under Thompson, but broke into the win column on Dec. 13, with a 30-23 win against visiting Scio. In the second half of the doubleheader the Santiam boys squad, which is ranked No. 14 in Class 2A, improved to 3-1 with an 85-24 win against the Loggers.

The Santiam squads open Tri-River Conference play Jan. 4 against Kennedy.

The Scio boys, 1-3, and the 0-5 Loggers girls squad open PacWest Conference play Jan. 3 against Jefferson.

Wrestling: Santiam returns Wyatt Dayton, who was third at 138 pounds a year ago in the OSAA Class 2A-1A state championships. Dayton will wrestle at 145 this season. Jordan Smith (145 a year ago) and Lukas Lebahn (152) both come into their sophomore years with district meet match wins under their belts.
