Christmas fire safety tips

The Mill City Volunteer Fire Department would like to remind everyone of some simple holiday safety tips.

Candles start many fires every year. Blow candles out when you leave your house. Keep candles away from flammable items like clothing, furniture, curtains, greenery and decorations. Use sturdy metal, glass or ceramic candle holders. Keep candles out of reach of pets and children. Place candles out of high traffic areas. Keep wicks trimmed to a height of ¼-inch at all times.

Christmas trees are another fire hazard in your home. Before setting up a tree, cut off at least 2 inches from the bottom. This will allow it to absorb water. Water daily and keep it at least 3 feet from any heat sources.

Check your lights before installation. Throw away any that have loose connections, broken sockets, or frayed or bare wires. Do not put more than three strands of lights on any extension cord, and check that extension cords are heavy enough and in good condition.

Check your tree daily for any signs that it has become to dry. Needles should stay flexible. If you bend the needles and they break, it’s time to remove the tree from your house.

Remember to check your smoke detector. Everyone needs at least one detector on every level of their home.

The volunteer firemen would like to wish you all a safe holiday season and remember to be careful with all of your holiday decorations.
