Optimism prevails as Memorial Day looms

The Detroit Lake area is gearing up for Memorial Day weekend with all signs seeming to point toward a successful one.

First, the lake itself should be at or close to full pool. There were worries about that issue earlier this spring, said Mayor Jim Trett, but a rainy April helped allay those fears.

“The lake level was a concern,” he said, “but then the rains started. By the end of April it was clear that those threats were gone.”

As of Tuesday, May 23, as The Canyon Weekly was headed to press the lake was at 1,555.4 feet, just three feet below what is considered the high water mark, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

That means plenty of water for boaters and fisher folk and the lake’s two marinas to work with.

“The state park is filling up and we’re optimistic that we’re going to have a good summer business-wise,” Trett said.

At the moment the weather seems to be cooperating. Long-range forecasts show a small chance of rain for Friday, May 26. Temperatures are forecast to be fairly moderate, around 70 or so through the weekend. Most days it will be partly cloudy.
