In Memoriam: Donna Chance-Van Osdol (Aug. 14, 1946 – Feb. 2, 2024)

Donna (Christine) Chance-Van Osdol, 77, of Lyons, died Feb. 2, 2024. She was born to Wanda and Stanley Chance of Mill City on Aug. 14, 1946.

Chris grew up in the Mill City area and attended both elementary school and Santiam High School, graduating in 1964.

She worked as a waitress for five years at Viv’s Steakhouse before moving on to Salem Police Department Records from 1968 to 1972, eventually moving to the Salem Community Development Department.

Chris married Jack Van Osdol on Oct. 18, 1975. He was the captain of the Salem Police Department. They were together for more than 40 years. Jack preceded her in death on March 30, 2014.

Chris loved baking, cooking, bird watching, wildlife, country music, watching cop shows, going to swap meets and decorating the house for Christmas. She also enjoyed her cats.

Chris supported many charities, including Safe Haven for military veterans, Humane Society, American Bible Society and Wounded Warriors.

Chris was preceded in death by her parents, Wanda and Stanley; husband, Jack Van Osdol; and brother, David Chance.

Chris is survived by her guardian angel and best friend, John Ripp.
