The Canyon Service Center is hosting a free fall prevention class from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the center, 844 S First St., Mill City.
The center is offering the class to note “national fall prevention week,” Sept. 18-22.
The class will be conducted by a licensed physical therapist from First Call Home Health.
CSC president and retired nurse Joanne Olson says the issue is a vital one for seniors.
“Since becoming president of the Canyon Service Center in March, I personally know three active Santiam Canyon older adults who have fallen, two of which resulted in a fracture,” Olson said. “The falls were avoidable accidents, silly mistakes any of us can make. As we age our bodies change in ways that make us more likely to be injured when we do fall.”
The Canyon Service Center also offers a short-term loan program with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches, commodes, toilet risers, and bath benches and chairs for those weakened or injured. Call 503-897-4176 for more information.
“Preventing falls can add to our quality of life, not only because we avoid injuries but also because of the positive effects of fall prevention measures,” Olson said. “Such things as activities that improve balance and strength, good eye glasses if needed, reviewing medications with your doctor, good lighting at home, and staying alert to your surroundings are all beneficial.”
The fall prevention class is part of the CSC’s new “Wellness After 50” program. Olson said that a series of health, safety and fitness classes are planned.
