Breitenbush gets spruce-up for Earth Day

Reporter for The Canyon Weekly

Volunteers are needed to work in the Lower Breitenbush Hot Springs area to get the area ready for Earth Day celebrations on April 20.

The event is being coordinated by SOLVE, the Cascade Volunteers, the Detroit Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest and Linn County Parks and Recreation.

The work begins with a one- or two-day job to pack a water pump to the soaks. The volunteers will pump out the soaks, power wash and hand scrub, and then refill with fresh hot spring water. The dates will be in the April 15-19 range subject to the U.S. Forest Service schedule.

On April 20, the volunteers  will clean the dispersed recreation sites in the Lower Breitenbush Hot Springs Area as part of the Adopt-A-River initiative.

On April 21, the work will move to the nearby Short Lake as part of Cascade Volunteers Love-Your-Lake initiative.

Work begins at 9 a.m. each day and a volunteering minimum of two hours is suggested. The meeting place is the Lower Breitenbush Hot Springs parking lot. The work is not taking place at the Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort & Conference center.

Free camping is available April 19-21 at the Cleator Bend Group Campground. Camping advance registration with Friends of the Breitenbush Cascades. To reserve a spot call 503- 897-8575 or email [email protected]. The same phone number and email works for general information throughout the weekend.

April 20 also will include an evening program of history talks and music.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring a backpack for hands-free convenience. They can bring their personal tools if available and a reusable water bottle to support sustainability efforts. Organizers will provide gloves, grabbers, trash bags, and Forest Service tools.
