Linn County investigates vehicle shootings

Oregon State Police are investigating multiple incidents of moving vehicles being struck by gunfire on highways in Linn County, including in the Santiam Canyon.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, OSP announced five vehicles had been damaged by a firearm in similar shootings between Nov. 2 and Dec. 6.

No injuries have been reported and OSP said the shootings appear to be random.

They said patrols have been increased in the affected areas to ensure public safety.

Known shootings include:

Nov. 2 at 2 a.m. on Hwy. 20 just east of Albany; Nov. 25 at 9:30 a.m. on Hwy. 22E near Mill City; Dec. 1 at 2:30 a.m. on Hwy. 20 west of Crabtree; Dec. 5 at 2 a.m. on Hwy. 226 south of Scio; Dec. 6 at 2:37 a.m. on Hwy. 20 west of Crabtree.

OSP initially received reports of shootings that occurred on Dec. 1 and 5 and its Major Crimes Section began investigating them as being potentially connected.

Through the Albany Police Department, OSP learned of the Nov. 2 and 25 incidents, and the Dec. 6 shooting came to light through the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

OSP’s investigation has revealed that, in multiple instances, vehicle occupants reported hearing a “pop” while on the highway.

OSP is seeking public assistance in identifying potential suspects or suspect vehicles including any unreported incidents. Those with information are encouraged to call 1-800-442-2068 or 677 on a mobile device.
