ODF seeks member for smoke management advisory committee

The Oregon Department of Forestry has an opening for a public representative on a committee that advises on smoke management.

The Smoke Management Advisory Committee (SMAC) provides advice and assistance to an ODF smoke management program.

The committee, established in 1989, consists of representatives of industrial forestland owners, non-industrial forestland owners, the general public, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Each member serves for two-year terms that are renewable. Appointments are made by the state forester.

“This is an opportunity for the public to get involved and make sure that their voice and concerns are heard when it comes to prescribed fire smoke management in Oregon,” said Stacy McCarter, mitigation program manager for the ODF.

Committee members meet in Salem twice a year to discuss issues and provide advice regarding current prescribed burning and smoke intrusion trends, program fund balances, implementation of work plan items, and other issues and projects.

To apply, complete an online questionnaire at and submit it to McCarter by email at [email protected] by May 1.

For more information or specific questions about the committee, please contact McCarter at 503-701-0236 or [email protected]. Additional SMAC background information can be found at https://www.oregon.gov/odf/board/Pages/smac.aspx.
