OSU forestry course set for Camp Taloali

Oregon State University Extension is hosting a basic forestry course for woodland owners and caretakers this October.

The course, which is offered throughout the state periodically by OSU Extension foresters, provides an introductory program for people who are new to managing a small woodland property or who would like a refresher on the basics.

“This course is a unique opportunity for woodland owners to connect with their neighbors and get their questions answered by local experts,” said Glenn Ahrens, OSU Extension forester in a press release. “It is a great option for those who recently acquired land, who are facing challenges with their land management, or who are simply looking to learn something new.”

Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on activities, participants will learn about plant identification, assessing growing conditions and tree health, forest ecology and management, enhancing wildlife habitat, harvesting and operations, and local resources for technical and financial assistance. A field day also will allow students to tour a small woodland to see examples on the ground of concepts they learned in the course work.

The sessions will take place on the last four Thursdays in October, Oct. 10, Oct. 17, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Camp Taloali, 15934 SE North Santiam Hwy., just up Highway 22 in the Canyon from the Cascade Highway.

An optional lunch hour will provide further time to network, ask questions, and get to know local woodland owners. The forestry field day is set for Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a site to be announced.

Registration is required. To signup go to https://beav.es/bfs24.

The course costs $40 per person or $50 per family.

The instructors will be Ahrens and Lorelle Sherman, OSU extension agent for Linn, Benton, and Polk counties.

For information call the OSU Extension office at 503-588-5301.
