Santiam’s Peterson tops state in 4 events

Santiam High junior Averie Peterson leads Class 2A in four events in the early going of the track and field season.

Peterson is the defending Class 2A state champion in the 800 meters. She also finished third in the 400 and triple jump and fifth in the long jump a year ago at state.

Peterson has the state’s best 400 (1:00.50) and 800 (2:26.20) in 2024 while also leading in long jump (16-2.5) and triple jump (33-1.25). The first three performances came at a March 13 meet at Nestucca, with the triple jump recorded at a March 20 meet at Regis.

Several of Peterson’s teammates also are showing up well on the state lists provided by Athletic.Net. Maggie Sisk is ranked 10th in the 3,000 meters with a 15:04.10. Reese Longfellow is seventh in the triple jump at 31-3. On the boys side Kross Martinson is 14th in the 800 at 2:17.37 and Colt Twede is 15th in the shot put (37-0.25).
