Georgia Lou Shaw, 108, died Dec. 12, 2023. She was born to William Davis and Mettie Maud Shaw in Lubbock, Texas, on June 9, 1915. A year later, the family moved to Mountainair, New Mevico, where her father homesteaded. She was the youngest of six children.
After having completed two summers at the University of New Mexico, Georgia Lou rode horseback nine miles each way to teach in a one-room school in Chupadero, New Mexico.
After teaching for two years, she married Carroll Brooks Evans in 1936. They moved to Albuquerque, where Carroll was a jack of all trades. They lived in several rural communities in the area. Georgia Lou and Carroll had three children, Yrma Jo (1937), William Davis (1943), Martha Fay (1947). Carroll died in 1960.
In 1966, she married rancher Frank Aker. She did everything from cooking big dinners for drop-in neighbors to helping deliver a calf in distress. Frank died in 1997.
Spanish was Georgia’s second language. She learned Spanish while teaching mostly Hispanic children.
Of most importance, Georgia loved Jesus and was a serious student of the Bible. She was a blessing to many. Her dedication to God and His Word gave her the strength to be the person she was.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Davis and Mettie Maud Shaw; a daughter, Jo Bond; and a grandson, Kyle Bond.
Georgia Lou is survived by her children, Davis (Stephen) Evans, Martha Fay (David) Magee, and Harvey Bond; grandchildren, Greg Bond, Barry Bond, Clay Bond, Bill Evans, Charlotte Crimi, Tim Evans, Faith Sanchez, Jennifer Magee, Judy Selfridge, Cheryl Hubbard, Jennifer McCarn, Jill Howe, Sandy Hill, Sean Starr; 25 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great grandchildren.
A viewing was held Dec. 20 at French Mortuary, Eubank and Lomas. Funeral services were held at Cuba Baptist Church followed by burial at Cuba Baptist Church.
