Fire department tips for a safe holiday

The Mill City Volunteer Fire Department is reminding everyone of some simple holiday safety tips.

Candles: Candles are starting more and more fires every year. Make sure to blow them out when ever you leave the house.

Keep candles away from flammable items like clothing, furniture, curtains, greenery and decorations.

Make sure to use sturdy metal, glass or ceramic candle holders.

Keep candles out of the reach of pets and children, and out of high traffic areas.

Make sure to keep wicks trimmed to a height of ¼-inch at all times.

Christmas Trees: Christmas trees are another fire hazard in your home.

Before setting up your tree, make sure to cut off at least two inches from the bottom. This will make sure it will absorb water while in the stand. Water your tree daily, and make sure to keep it at least three inches from any heat sources.

Check all of your lights before installing them, and throw away any that have loose connections, broken sockets, or have frayed or bare wires. Make sure not to put more than three strands of lights on any extension cord, and check that all extension cords are heavy enough and in good condition.

Don’t forget to check your tree daily for any signs that it has become too dry. Needles on the tree should stay flexible. If you bend the needles over and they break off, it’s time to remove the tree from the house.

Smoke Detectors: Remember to check your smoke detector, also. Everyone needs at least one detector on every level of their home.

If you know someone that does not have a detector, it makes an excellent Christmas present.

The volunteer firemen are wishing all a safe holiday season and asking you remember to be careful with all of your holiday decorations.
