Canyon Service Center gets grant for interior work

The Canyon Service Center is redoing its interior, with the help of a donation from the Freres Foundation. Interior updates planned include new paint, carpet, tables, lighting, curtains, and a big-screen TV.

“We’re a nonprofit that relies solely on donations and volunteers,” said Joanne Olson, CSC’s president. “The grant and many hours of volunteer work has helped create a more modern, bright, and pleasing setting for the many new events we’ll host.”

The Canyon Service Center, at 844 First Ave., in Mill City, also has added two new evening events happening monthly. Playing card bingo and a 50/50 raffle are set for the second Thursday of the month at 6:20 p.m. In addition, there will be a free movie night on every third Tuesday, also at 6:20 p.m. Both events are preceded by refreshments for sale at 6 p.m.

Olson, a retired RN, also said, “I’m excited about the new Wellness After 50 program offerings.

Starting Thursday, Nov. 2, I’ll be checking blood pressure and providing educational materials about high blood pressure from 1p.m. to 2 p.m.”

The service will continue monthly on the first Thursday, from 1 to 2 p.m., and anyone is welcome to stop in for this health check.

Monday, Nov. 13, the CSC begins Group Fitness, which runs from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Its activities are being designed to cover most health and ability levels. Group Fitness will be held every Monday and Friday at 10:30 a.m., excluding the first Friday of each month.

Also on Nov. 13, the CSC will conduct a free class on understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia. The registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 3. Dessert is available at 6:30 p.m., with the training following at 7 p.m.

Olson said that the Center is planning a service-oriented outing in December, with details still to come. The Center continues to loan mobility equipment, accept used clothing and shoes for the underprivileged, and recycle cans and bottles, “all to help the community and pay the CSC bills,” Olson said.

For further information on events and activities call the CSC at 503-897-4176 or email [email protected]. A calendar summary is available on the CSC voicemail message. Details for all CSC events are posted, The Canyon Weekly Calendar, the Mill City Messenger, and on fliers posted in public spaces in the area.
