SH2A launching Canyon Kids Music Camp

Santiam Hearts to Arts (H2A) is proud to host a new Canyon Kids Music Camp to help instill a passion for music and performing arts in local students.

Led by husband and wife musicians David and Laura Erickson, the program is scheduled for Aug. 7 to 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at Stewart’s Hall, in Mill City.

The program is open to kids ages 8 to 10 of all musical backgrounds. Registration is $25 per student, with forms available at santiamh2a.org. The program is capped to 40 students and spaces are first-come, first-served.

The Ericksons moved to the Santiam Canyon about five years ago after David Erickson retired from a 22-year career teaching music in elementary schools. They developed a connection with the local music community by joining the Santiam Community Chorus, which is also sponsored by Santiam H2A.

David Erickson also came out of retirement in April to become music teacher for Santiam Elementary School.

David Erickson told The Canyon Weekly he and his wife developed a lifelong love of music during their own experiences in kids’ programs, and shared a dream of someday starting a children’s choir. They approached Santiam H2A with the idea and were given a green light to move forward with Canyon Kids Music Camp this summer.

“We hope the camp kids will enjoy singing together in harmony, but just as importantly, we hope that the kids become open minded about participating in musical opportunities for the rest of their lives,” said David Erickson.

He said campers will learn songs and vocal techniques, play group games, brave stage fright, meet new friends, and perhaps discover a passion or a talent they did not know they had.

“Kids in the community will have a great opportunity to do something that will benefit them for a lifetime,” said David Erickson “It’s outside the norm, enriching, and brings people together in a positive way.”

He said he and Laura are very excited for this opportunity, and glad for support and encouragement from Santiam H2A.

“We’re very grateful for their presence and partnership,” he said.
