Lyons sex offender arrested for theft

A Lyons man and registered sex offender has been arrested on new charges after allegedly stealing multiple thousands of dollars from an elderly victim.

David Lee Ansted, 65, was arrested June 29 by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office for alleged thefts occurring between March of 2019 and October of 2020 involving a female victim age 65 or older.

According to court records, Ansted allegedly stole at least $10,000 in one 2019 incident, and at least $1,000 each in three separate incidents between 2019 and 2020. His arrest records indicate the thefts involved alleged credit card fraud, computer crimes and mishandling of entrusted property.

He was charged in Linn County Circuit Court with aggravated first-degree theft and three counts of first-degree theft and faces up to 10 years in prison on his highest count.

As of press time, he was lodged in the Linn County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Ansted was previously convicted in 1992 of first-degree rape in Marion County and sentenced to 34 months in prison. He was required to register as a sex offender and allegedly failed to make an annual report last year, and is facing a new felony charge of failure to report as a sex offender.
