Long-time Canyon supporter passes away

Mike Long, founder of the Santiam Canyon Youth Benefit Golf Tournament (YBGT), passed away March 7 after a short battle with cancer.

“It is with great sadness to announce the sudden passing of Mike Long. He fought a short battle with cancer and passed away peacefully yesterday [March 7, 2023]. He has made a huge impact in our community and he will be greatly missed,” YBGT posted to its Facebook page on March 8.

Long and his wife Jan started the tournament in 2001. Net proceeds from YBGT are distributed as scholarships to graduating seniors from Santiam, Regis and Stayton, and funding assistance grants for youth programs in the Santiam Canyon.

Facebook filled with condolences and memories of Long after the announcement of his death.

“Mike was a champion supporter of our Canyon, especially our youth.

“Giving time, energy and mostly his passion, he acknowledged his faith in our future by planting seeds of promise, wrapped in mini grants & scholarships,” the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce, where Long served as a long-standing board member, posted to its Facebook page. “Our sincere condolences to Jan and the entire Long family. Mike is Canyon family, too, and he is already sorely missed.”

Debi Meier posted, “Such a devastating loss to our community. He will be greatly missed.”

“Heartfelt condolences all around,” Danielle Gonzalez posted. “Mike was a dedicated leader. He truly benefited us all.”

“Mike led an impactful life,” the Santiam Scholarship Banquet posted. “He set an example for so many of us and truly made a difference in our community.”

A memorial service will be held for Long at 11 a.m. March 18 in the auditorium at Santiam Junior/Senior High, 300 SW Cedar St., Mill City. After the service, a gathering will be held at the Eagles Lodge, 640 SW Broadway St., Mill City.
