Santiam wrestlers head to Linn County championship event

The Santiam High wrestling squad will participate in Jan. 6’s Pape Linn County Wrestling Championships.

The meet is hosted by Lebanon High and Wolverines coach Kerry Crowston describes it as “a tough one.”

Top entrants from Santiam include Wyatt Dayton, who is 9-4 at 145 pounds and Lukas Lebahn, who is 8-4 at 152 pounds. The Wolverines have proven particularly tough in the middleweight area, with Crowston moving Jordan Smith down a weight class from 145 pounds to 138 pounds. Smith was 4-4 at 145 pounds.

The squad also competed against Sisters this week after The Canyon Weekly’s presstime.

The Wolverines, ranked No. 18 in Class 2A by the OSAA, went 1-2 during the holidays at the Newport Coast Classic hosted by Newport High. The squad opened with a pair of close losses (47-46 to Catlin Gabel and 58-52 vs. Class 5A The Dalles) before closing with an impressive 63-48 win against Corbett.

The Wolverines’ girls squad, meanwhile, was 2-6 entering league play. Santiam also went 1-2 in the Newport holiday tournament, downing Elkton 19-17 before falling to Class 5A Caldera of Bend, 43-15, and Class 4A North Bend, 30-23.
