Gates mayor Ron Carmickle dies at age 70

Reporter for The Canyon Weekly

Ron Carmickle, the mayor of Gates, has died.

Carmickle was elected in 2020 after earlier that year being recalled as a city councilor amid the fractious politics of the small Santiam Canyon community.

Carmickle, 70, reportedly had been battling “ongoing medical issues caused by a hernia” but no official cause of death has been released.

Carmickle died Sept. 29, said his son Zach Fairfield of Mill City.

A public memorial is being planned, Fairfield said, with Mill City being considered as a possible site.

Carmickle, whose home burned in the 2020 Labor Day wildfires, was elected mayor that November while living in a Federal Emergency Management Agency-provided trailer. He proved to be a strong post-fire advocate for the Canyon, speaking out in favor of wildfire recovery assistance efforts.

Carmickle, who was running unopposed for re-election as mayor, will remain on the ballot. Patrick Rahm, the council president, will chair meetings until a new mayor is named.
