SCSD 2022 Hall of Fame recipients announced

Ohrt, Childress, Miller, Zauner, Plotts to be honored Nov. 12

Chosen as the recipients for the 2022 Santiam Canyon School District’s Hall of Fame is former student Leland Ohrt, the selection committee announced this week.

Selected as former staff members are Wanda Childress, Ross Miller and Bob Zauner. David Plotts has been selected as both a former student and staff member.  

This year’s outstanding former team is the 2002 Volleyball team.

The recipients will be recognized at the 19th annual SCSD Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 12,  7 p.m. at the high school commons.  

Ohrt is a 1975 graduate of Santiam High School and has been active in the community and been Fire Chief for the Mill City Fire Department for many years.

Childress worked for the school district for more than 25 years in food services, while also going above and beyond by heading up and serving at several school and community functions, plus coaching track in the district.

Miller taught English and Humanities classes at the high school for more than 35 years and also helped re-develop the music program at the junior/senior high school. He organized scholarship programs and special trips to Ashland to attend plays.

Zauner taught physical education and health to students in grades K-12 for about 30 years.  He also helped coach football, basketball and other sports during his tenure in the district.

Plotts taught physical education and health for grades 4-12 for 18 years before becoming the junior/senior high school principal for 21 years. He also coached football, basketball, track and cross country.

The 2002 Santiam Volleyball to date is still the only team which has ever qualified for the state volleyball tournament from Santiam High School.  

Members of the team were: (seniors) Jenny Adams, Elsa Cisneros (manager), Patricia Jerger, Holly Luke, Nicole McMullen, Kim Plotts, Nicole Podrabsky, Hallie Reeves, Katie Selby, and Kerri Zauner;  (juniors) Jennie Benjamin and Jeri Hoover.  

The team was coached by Head Coach Dawn Reichle. Assistant coaches were Dan Cunderman and Sheila Nielsen.

Tickets are $15 for adults. $10 for school-age children and free to pre-school and younger.  There will be no sales at the door.  Tickets must be purchased at least two weeks in advance.

This event is the same weekend as the annual alumni tournament.
