In Memoriam: William North (Nov. 10, 1941 – March 25, 2022)

William (Bill) Gilbert North, 80, of Sublimity died March 25, 2022 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born on Nov. 10, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, to the Rev. Kendal and Hazel North, and spent his childhood years in the Midwest.

In the 1950s, the family moved West, where Bill graduated from South Salem High School. He received his Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Idaho State University. While in Idaho, he met and fell in love with Carol, and they married in 1965. 

Bill dedicated his working years to helping others as a social worker, a Peace Corps volunteer and a Sublimity Middle School teacher. After earning a Masters in Education from Western Oregon State College, he taught students with special needs in Portland Public Schools. 

Bill had a love of nature, travel, family, and service to his faith as a member of the United Methodist Church. He often volunteered his time to support people in need, including delivering Christmas food baskets, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and volunteering in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, and woodworking. 

Bill was predeceased by parents and siblings, Cliff and Lois. He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Kenye (Moti), Katie, and Kara (Jeff); grandchildren, Jacob, Sayuri, and Hitoshi; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at Stayton United Methodist Church. Serving the family is North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
