Moderna vaccine gets new name

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for people 18 years of age and older on Jan. 31.

The Moderna vaccine had previously received emergency use authorization.

Once a vaccine receives FDA approval, the manufacturer typically gives it a brand name. Spikevax is the new name for the approved Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Nothing else about the Moderna vaccine has changed. Spikevax is the exact same Moderna COVID-19 vaccine that was first authorized for use in December 2020, with the same high degree of safety and effectiveness.
